Manager Self-Service, or MSS, is the set of HR system capabilities that let people managers directly view their team’s data and take HR actions for their team, without routing everything through HR.
A manager using MSS can approve leave and time-off requests, view team attendance and headcount reports, initiate or approve salary changes and promotions, and manage performance reviews for their direct reports. The clean distinction from Employee Self-Service, or ESS: an employee acts on their own data through ESS, applying for their own leave, viewing their own payslip, while a manager acts on team data through MSS, approving that same leave request. The two are usually sequential, an employee submits through ESS, a manager approves through MSS, rather than two unrelated systems.
No, MSS is scoped specifically to a manager’s own direct reports through role-based access control, not the broader org-wide access an HR admin has.
Change compensation structure or statutory settings, those stay with payroll admins even when a manager can approve or recommend a change.
Most modern platforms support it through a mobile HR app, useful for quick approvals without opening a laptop.
