An HR chatbot is an automated conversational interface that lets employees ask HR questions or trigger simple actions in plain language, instead of navigating menus or emailing HR directly.
Chatbots handle structured, data-lookup tasks reliably: checking a leave balance, submitting a leave request, retrieving a payslip, answering a policy question pulled straight from the employee handbook. They fall short, consistently across independent sources including legal commentary, not just vendor marketing, on harassment or discrimination complaints, accommodation requests, and other emotionally sensitive or legally nuanced issues that need human judgment, confidentiality and context a bot can’t reliably provide. A well-built deployment has clear escalation rules that route those topics to a human rather than attempting to resolve them automatically. “Conversational AI” and “HR chatbot” are used almost interchangeably in current marketing, though conversational AI is really the broader underlying technology, with the HR chatbot being one specific application of it.
It shouldn’t try to. Sensitive complaints need to be routed to a human and, where relevant, the formal channel your POSH policy requires, not resolved inside a bot conversation.
Related but not identical. An HR helpdesk is a ticketing system for queries a human eventually handles; a chatbot tries to resolve simple queries instantly without a human touching them.
For simple, repetitive questions, generally yes, since the answer comes back instantly rather than waiting on a reply.
