Leave balance is simply how much paid leave you have left: what’s accrued, minus what you’ve already taken or encashed, tracked separately for each leave type since earned leave, casual leave and sick leave usually run on their own rules.
For one employee, keeping a leave balance straight is trivial. Across a growing company, with different joining dates, different accrual schedules, different carry-forward caps, and manual corrections for missed punches or approved-but-unlogged leave, small errors compound fast. A balance that’s off by even a day or two per employee, multiplied across a large workforce, becomes a real reconciliation problem at year end, especially once encashment is calculated from it.
Generally yes; letting employees see their own real-time balance, rather than having to ask HR, reduces disputes and planning mistakes.
Usually tracked separately, since comp-off typically runs on its own shorter validity window rather than the standard annual leave cycle.
