What is an AI video interview?

HR software Updated October 2026

An AI video interview is usually a one-way recorded interview: candidates answer preset questions on their own time and software transcribes, sorts or scores the videos. Automated scoring of voice or face is contested, so recruiters should review the recordings themselves and tell candidates what is analysed.

An AI video interview is usually a one-way, asynchronous interview: the candidate records answers to preset questions on their own time, and software transcribes, sorts or scores the recordings before a recruiter watches them. The “AI” part varies a lot, from simple transcription to automated ranking, and that difference matters far more than the video. The questions themselves should come from a structured interview design.

What the software is doing with the recording

Ask which of these the tool does, because vendors blur them:

  • Logistics only: sends the link, records within a time limit, lets reviewers watch at 1.5x speed. Low risk, and it saves real hours in campus and bulk hiring where scheduling 800 first rounds is the bottleneck.
  • Transcription and search: turns answers into text reviewers can skim.
  • Automated scoring: a model rates the answers, sometimes the voice, and in the past the face, then ranks candidates. This is where the controversy sits.

The best-known example: HireVue announced in January 2021 that it had dropped facial analysis from new assessments, saying language analysis had made visual analysis add little value. That followed a 2019 complaint to the US FTC by the privacy group EPIC calling the method unproven and prone to bias. Scoring on tone or expression can also penalise accents, poor bandwidth, a shared room in a small town or a disability, none of which predicts the job. See algorithmic bias in hiring for how to test for it.

Consent and the law

India has no AI-specific hiring rule. Recordings are personal data, and the DPDP Act’s notice and consent duties bind from 13 May 2027 (details on the DPDP employee data page); until then, if a tool extracts face or voice biometrics, the older IT Act rules on sensitive data, which ask for written consent, may apply. For reference abroad, Illinois has required notice, an explanation and consent before AI analyses interview videos since 1 January 2020, and the EU AI Act has banned emotion recognition in workplaces since 2 February 2025. Neither binds an Indian employer hiring in India, but they show what a fair process looks like: tell candidates what is analysed, get consent, offer a live alternative and delete on request.

Frequently asked questions

Should the AI score decide who moves forward?

No; have a recruiter watch and rate the shortlisted recordings on an interview scorecard, and use any machine score only to order the queue, checked regularly for skew by group.

Are one-way interviews bad for candidate experience?

Many candidates find talking to a camera awkward, and senior hires often refuse; they work better for high-volume entry roles than for lateral hiring of experienced people.

How long should we keep the recordings?

Set a short, written retention period for unsuccessful candidates and stick to it; a video is far more sensitive than a CV.
