Resume parsing is software that reads a CV and converts it into structured fields (name, contact details, employers, dates, education, skills) so the data can be stored, searched and filtered inside an applicant tracking system without anyone retyping it.
Parsing only extracts. Deciding who is shortlisted is resume screening, which takes the parsed fields and applies criteria or ranking. Keyword matching is a third thing: it searches raw text for terms. A parser lets you ask “candidates with 4 to 6 years in Pune, currently serving notice” because the experience, location and notice details are separate data points, not words buried in a paragraph.
The parsed record also builds your candidate pipeline and talent database automatically, which matters when hundreds of applications arrive through job portals, email and referrals.
Vendors quote accuracy figures, but they depend heavily on the CV mix and how “accuracy” is counted, so test with a few hundred of your own real resumes, including ugly ones. Always keep the original file one click away from the parsed record, and let recruiters correct fields. A badly parsed CV that silently ranks low is the real risk, which is why parsing should assist a recruiter’s review and not replace it.
Resumes are personal data. The DPDP Act covers applicants as well as employees, though its core duties (notice, consent, rights) are scheduled to bind only from 13 May 2027, with the older IT Act rules still applying meanwhile. Set a retention period for unsuccessful candidates now; the employee data retention page covers the principle.
Support varies by vendor, and most English-language parsers handle English CVs best. If you hire in regional languages, ask for a test on real samples before you buy.
Yes: single column, standard headings, a text-based PDF or DOCX, and no key details in headers or images. That also helps human readers.
It can be sold as an API, but most Indian buyers get it as a built-in feature of recruitment software or an ATS.
If you are comparing tools, the applicant tracking system guide shows what to check beyond parsing.
