A raw pay gap between two groups is a starting signal, not a verdict. This calculator gives you the unadjusted gap between any two groups doing comparable work, and is honest about what that number can and cannot tell you on its own.
The unadjusted gap simply compares two averages. It does not control for role, seniority, tenure, location, or performance, all of which can legitimately explain part or all of a raw difference. A 10% gap between two departments could reflect genuine discrimination, or it could reflect one department having more senior tenure on average, or a different mix of roles entirely. The honest use of this number is as a trigger for a closer look, comparing pay within the same role and level specifically, rather than as proof by itself.
India’s own gender pay gap statistics are genuinely disputed across sources, government labour data and industry surveys do not agree on a single figure, which is itself an argument for organizations to run their own internal pay equity checks rather than relying on a national number that may not reflect their specific workforce.
Not necessarily, since a matched overall average can still hide inequity within specific roles or levels if, for example, one group is overrepresented in senior positions and underrepresented in junior ones. Check compa-ratios within specific roles using our Compa-Ratio Calculator for a more precise view.
Ideally the same role, level, and tenure band. Comparing across very different roles or seniority levels will produce a gap number that reflects role mix rather than pay equity, so keep the comparison as narrow and like-for-like as you can.
Common approaches include pay transparency initiatives and structured compensation reviews; see our guide to innovative HR policies for how organizations are approaching pay transparency in practice.
Compa-ratio checks one person against their role’s range; this tool checks two groups against each other. Used together, they give a fuller picture, an individual could have a healthy compa-ratio while still sitting on the losing side of a group-level gap. Our Salary Breakup Calculator can help clarify what is actually being compared when CTC structures differ between the two groups.
