What is a weekly off?

Leave & attendance Updated September 2026

A weekly off is the statutory one-day rest requirement under Indian labour law, commonly defaulting to Sunday but explicitly substitutable with another day, which is how seven-day operations like retail and BPO stay compliant by rostering staff onto staggered rest days instead.

A weekly off is the one paid rest day every employee is entitled to each week, a statutory floor under Indian labour law, not a discretionary company perk.

How it works

Under the Factories Act and corresponding state Shops and Establishments Acts, employees are entitled to at least one full day of rest in every seven-day period. Sunday is the common default, but it’s explicitly substitutable with another day, which is exactly why retail, manufacturing and BPO operations that run seven days a week can still comply, by rostering staff onto different weekly off days rather than closing entirely. Where an employee is required to work through their scheduled weekly off, a substitute rest day is generally owed, which is the basis for comp-off in a factory-worker context specifically.

Frequently asked questions

Can an employer skip the weekly off entirely with extra pay instead?

No, the weekly rest requirement isn’t something that can simply be bought out with pay; a substitute rest day, not just compensation, is the standard remedy for missing it.

Does the weekly off have to be the same day every week?

Not necessarily, particularly in shift-based or rotational operations, as long as the employee actually gets a qualifying rest day within each cycle.
