What is the PF passbook?

Payroll & statutory Updated October 2026

The PF passbook shows each month's employee contribution, employer EPF share (3.67%), EPS pension share, interest and transfers or withdrawals per member ID. Entries appear only after the employer's ECR is processed, so a lag of a month or two is normal.

The PF passbook is the online statement of your provident fund account. It shows every month’s employee and employer contribution, the pension (EPS) share, interest, transfers and withdrawals, and it is the quickest way to check that your employer is really depositing what your payslip says.

Where to see it and what it shows

Go to the Member Passbook portal at passbook.epfindia.gov.in and sign in with your UAN and password. The UMANG app gives the same view. If you have worked in several places you will see a separate passbook for each member ID.

The columns to read are:

  • Employee share: your 12%, fully yours.
  • Employer share: only the 3.67% that goes into the PF account, which is why it looks smaller than your own share.
  • Pension contribution: the 8.33% that goes into EPS. It builds pension service, not a withdrawable balance.

The split is explained under PF contribution rate.

Timing, and why entries are missing

A passbook entry appears only after the employer files the monthly ECR and the money is processed, so a lag of a month or two is normal. A new member ID after a job change can take longer to show. Interest is calculated monthly but credited once, after the financial year closes. The 8.25% rate for FY 2025-26 was notified around July 2026, so credits for that year would appear around now.

If the employer share is missing, the usual causes are:

  1. The ECR for that month is not yet filed, or was filed late.
  2. Contributions were posted to a different or duplicate UAN or member ID.
  3. The employer deposited the wrong wage, or only the employee share.
  4. A transfer from the old job has not settled.

Match each month’s amounts against your payslip and the employer’s challan. Persistent gaps should go to HR first, then to EPFO’s grievance system.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my employer’s contribution shown as lower than mine?

Because part of the employer’s 12% went to pension. Nothing is missing.

Can I download it as a PDF?

Yes, from the passbook portal for each member ID. Lenders and visa teams often ask for it. If a balance looks wrong after a transfer, download both IDs’ passbooks.

Does the passbook show my total corpus?

It shows balances per member ID, so add up all of them to get your total.
