Recruitment · Updated September 2026
Campus recruitment is how companies hire students directly from colleges and institutes, typically before or shortly after graduation, through a structured funnel run with the institution’s placement cell.
Companies first register with a college’s placement cell, then run a pre-placement talk introducing their profile, roles and compensation to the student batch. Selection typically moves through a test, sometimes a group discussion, then technical and HR interview rounds, ending in offer letters. A pre-placement offer, or PPO, is an offer extended based on a student’s performance during a prior internship, made before the formal placement season begins, common at top institutes. Placement season broadly runs October through March, with the main window at premier institutes concentrated around December and January. Companies are often grouped into “Day 1,” “Day 2” and so on based on offer competitiveness, with the most sought-after employers getting first access to the top candidates, and students typically leaving the pool once they accept a Day 1 offer.
No, off-campus hiring recruits fresh graduates outside the formal placement process, through job portals or direct applications, rather than via the college’s placement cell.
A PPO is extended earlier, based on internship performance, before the formal placement season and its Day 1/Day 2 structure even begins.
Campus hires generally cost less per hire but need far more time and training investment before reaching full productivity than lateral hires do.
