A mid-year review is the formal check-in at the halfway point of the appraisal cycle: end-September for an April-March year, end-June for January-December. Manager and employee look at progress on goals, fix what is drifting and reset what the business has changed, without giving a final appraisal rating.
Keep it to 45 to 60 minutes and send the employee a short prep form a week ahead. A sequence that works in most Indian mid-sized firms:
Judge progress against the shape of the year, not a straight line. Take a sales target of Rs 1.2 crore (Rs 120 lakh): Rs 48 lakh booked at six months is 40 percent, which looks behind until you note that the festive-quarter orders land in the second half. The review decides whether 40 percent is on plan, not whether it is below 50.
It should surface problems while there is still time to fix them, and it should leave a written record both sides can sign off. Teams on OKRs usually score key results and reset them in the same sitting.
It should not hand down a rating. The usual failure is a manager who says “all good” in October and then gives a below-expectations rating in March. Cover that with a rule that any concern raised in the final appraisal must appear in the mid-year note, or in the continuous feedback trail, earlier. If someone is clearly struggling, move to a structured improvement plan rather than waiting for March.
Record the outcome in the performance management software or a shared template, with goal changes version-tracked. Our performance management software guide covers tools that automate the reminders and sign-offs.
No. A one-on-one is a recurring, informal working conversation; the mid-year review is a once-a-cycle checkpoint against goals with a written outcome.
Not as decisions. Salary and promotion outcomes belong to the year-end cycle and its calibration; the mid-year conversation can say how the employee is tracking, and nothing more.
Do a lighter version: confirm goals are clear, check on-the-job learning and note early feedback. A full progress review means little before a person has had a full goal period.
Rewrite it at the review and note the date and reason, so the year-end rating is measured against the goal as it stood, not the one written in April.
Pair the mid-year note with a development plan so the next six months have a learning goal as well as a work goal.
