What is time to hire?

Recruitment Updated September 2026

Time to hire measures days from when a candidate enters the pipeline to when they accept the offer, a candidate-clock metric. It's frequently confused with time to fill, which measures the employer's internal cycle from requisition approval to a filled seat.

Time to hire measures the number of days from when a candidate enters the recruiting pipeline, their application or first contact, to when they accept the offer. It’s a candidate-clock metric, not an employer-clock one.

The confusion with time to fill, and why it matters

Time to fill measures something different: days from when a requisition is approved or the job is posted to when the role is actually filled, the employer’s clock, not the candidate’s. The two get mixed up constantly, including in a lot of published “India time to hire” figures online, which on closer inspection are often really measuring time to fill instead. There’s no reliable, independently verified national benchmark that breaks India time to hire down cleanly by role or sector, figures you’ll see cited (entry-level around two to three weeks, mid-level technical five to seven weeks, senior or niche roles two to four months) are directional industry estimates, not an audited standard, so use them as rough orientation rather than a fixed target.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the more useful metric, time to hire or time to fill?

They answer different questions. Time to hire reflects the candidate’s experience of your process speed; time to fill reflects your total internal cycle time from approval to a filled seat.

Does a longer notice period affect time to hire?

No, time to hire ends at offer acceptance, before the notice period even starts. It’s a separate, later phase of the overall hiring timeline.

What typically slows time to hire down?

Multiple, poorly scheduled interview rounds, slow internal feedback between stages, and delayed offer approvals are the most common bottlenecks.
