TOIL, Time Off In Lieu, gives an employee paid time off instead of overtime pay for extra hours worked. It’s a common alternative for salaried staff who aren’t covered by statutory overtime pay rules in the first place.
The two are closely related but not identical. Comp-off typically compensates for working a full scheduled day off, a holiday or weekly off. TOIL is broader and more granular, covering extra hours on an otherwise normal working day, not just full missed days off. A company might grant TOIL for a few extra hours put in during a crunch period, something comp-off as usually defined wouldn’t cover.
Most policies set a validity window, similar in spirit to comp-off, though the exact period is set by company policy rather than any statutory rule.
Depends on company policy; some allow conversion to pay, others require it to be taken as actual time off, similar to how comp-off encashment varies by employer.
