Succession planning often lives as a set of names in a spreadsheet rather than a measurable number. This calculator turns your critical-role coverage into two simple readiness metrics: how many roles have a ready-now successor, and how many have any identified successor at all.
This calculator is only as meaningful as your definition of “critical role.” It should mean roles where an unplanned exit would meaningfully disrupt the business, not every management position in the org chart. A long, loosely-defined list will dilute the signal, a short, deliberately curated one gives you a coverage number worth actually acting on. Each role should also only be counted once here, even if it has multiple potential successors, this tool assumes your counts are already deduplicated by role.
Ready-now means someone could step into the role today with minimal transition risk; ready-in-1-2-years means a successor is identified and developing but needs more time or experience before they’re a safe bet.
These are your highest-priority gaps, worth a deliberate development plan or, in the short term, a contingency plan for how the role would be covered if the incumbent left unexpectedly.
Strong succession coverage usually reflects healthy internal movement, since successors typically develop by moving through adjacent roles. Our Internal Mobility Rate Calculator measures that movement directly.
This calculator focuses specifically on internal succession coverage, external hiring is a valid contingency for uncovered roles but is a separate consideration from internal readiness.
A manager stretched too thin across too many reports has less time for succession development, our Span of Control Calculator is worth checking if your coverage numbers look thin across the board.
That’s exactly the gap this tool is meant to surface early, our Full & Final Settlement Calculator and Notice Period Calculator are useful for the practical exit-timeline planning once you know a transition is coming.
