Salary Increment Calculator

Salary Increment Calculator

A 10% hike sounds identical whether it follows a strong annual review or barely keeps pace with a job switch elsewhere. This calculator does the arithmetic in both directions, current CTC to new CTC, or a target CTC back to the required percentage, and tells you where your number actually sits against typical India benchmarks.

What counts as a “good” increment in India

Annual appraisal hikes for existing employees at the same company typically land in the 8 to 12% range, with 15 to 20% reserved for genuinely strong performers or a promotion bundled into the same cycle. Job-change increments run considerably higher, usually 20 to 30% for a standard lateral move, and 40 to 60% for senior or niche-skill roles where a company is actively competing for talent. If your number falls well outside these bands in either direction, it is worth checking whether the comparison is even apples to apples: a promotion increment and an appraisal increment answer different questions, and neither should be benchmarked against job-switch numbers.

One thing this tool deliberately does not do is translate the new CTC into take-home pay. A higher CTC usually pulls up your employer PF contribution and gratuity provision along with it, both of which sit inside CTC but never reach your bank account, so the percentage increase in your CTC and the percentage increase in what actually lands in hand are rarely identical.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my in-hand increase smaller than the percentage I was told?

Because the increment is usually applied to your full CTC, and CTC includes components like employer PF and gratuity provision that scale up with your salary but were never part of your take-home pay to begin with. Run the new CTC figure through our CTC to In-Hand Salary Calculator to see the real cash impact.

How do I know if my new salary is fair for my role?

A single increment percentage does not tell you where you land within your company’s actual pay band for the role. Our Compa-Ratio Calculator answers that by comparing your salary against your role’s defined range.

Should a promotion increment be calculated differently from an appraisal increment?

They often get bundled into one number, but a promotion typically reflects a level change and should be benchmarked separately from a same-level appraisal hike; see our article on what a promotion actually costs for how organizations usually structure this.

Is a job-change increment always the better financial move?

Usually higher in percentage terms, but it comes with its own costs and risks, notice period buyout being one of them if you need to exit early. See our Notice Period Buyout Calculator if that applies to your situation.
